# Jacob's Thoughtstream

A public feed of my thinking — some polished, most not.

## Two kinds of posts

**[Blog](blog/)** — longer, titled posts. Things I've thought about enough to name.
Tagged `@blog #publish` in my [NoteStream](https://notestream.cloud).

**[Stream](stream/)** — tweet-sized thoughts, by date. Raw, unedited, chronological.
Tagged `#publish` alone in NoteStream.

## How it works

I write notes in NoteStream throughout the day. When I tag one `#publish`, an agent
picks it up and mirrors it here — either as a blog post (if it's tagged `@blog`)
or appended to today's stream entry.

Source is NoteStream; this wiki is the public mirror.

## Why

Most of my thinking happens in fragments. Rather than polish everything into essays,
I want a public surface for the fragments themselves — plus the occasional
longer thing when a fragment wants to grow up.

# AI Frees Time for Self-Improvement

*2026-04-12*

One of the key things that AI enables is that it gives us the time to do
self-improvement. All those small backlog tasks that you never had time to do,
you can now do really quickly.

# The Power of Choice

*2026-03-11*

Revel in the power of your own agency.

When I am about to open up my phone and watch YouTube in the morning instead
of being quiet and going back to sleep — I can change that. I have a power to
make a choice. Celebrate that power, and remake the choice constantly. Those
choices stack up to create who I am and what I present as, until they are my
external clothing of identity.

Celebrate the joy that comes every time I do make a choice.

Relates to behavior change in *Horsestance*.

# Surfing in the Fog

*2026-03-11*

When surfing in the fog I am directly prompted to think philosophically.

I inevitably ponder the counterintuitive truism in quantum mechanics stating
that all that is unseen could be — and in fact is — anything and everything it
can be. As fellow wave riders, strangers and friends, wink out of my sphere of
sight and consciousness, as the steadfast constructs of society become
transient and melt into the muffling grayness, all standards for comparison
and preconceptions of perspective vanish and my thoughts branch out
unfettered.

As I ride (or duck beneath) the waves that silently materialize before me,
concepts that have long eluded me suddenly coalesce. The parallel pathfinding
algorithm underlying my project for the Intel STS came to me not in a
laboratory or classroom but as I watched the branching rivulets of water find
their way down my surfboard as I emerged from underneath a wave — I saw how
signals splitting and rejoining as they propagate through a network can
simulate the shortest path problem in computer science. Often, I find it more
productive to open my mind to the vast ocean's meditative lull than to study.

Sitting at peace in the stillness between the hollow waves is but one
tributary of the vast "stream of power and wisdom" that animates me, the great
river of physical and spiritual truth that emanates from nature. Running my
hand along the ice-glazed needles of the fallen pine, inhaling the
green-diffracted God-thought-breath of the morning forest, laughing as I hold
wide my windbreaker and lean euphorically into the rushing torrents of the
rain — this timeless rapture is my inspiration, this intricate, organic
splendor a sanctified model for my thoughts. This is why I paddle out, never
knowing exactly where I'll return to shore.

## TFT as a web surfboard

As someone who grew up surfing, I'm acutely aware of the impact that the board
you have has on what it feels like to, and how easy it is, to do what you're
wanting. Surfers are enchanted by the different feelings of trying different
boards. They are a lens through which the surfer relates to the world.

Similarly, the tools we use in our basic workflow for capturing and relating
to information can change how it feels to do so — and change the kind of
information we capture. The workflow is built for rapid capture, multiple
parallel projects, divergent thinking, and a step beyond towards organization.

The biggest bottleneck in our ability to augment our intelligence with
note-taking tools is in the *interface* — getting information out of our heads
and into the machine. So we're building an app entirely around that. Rapid
knowledge capture, as our first product.

## Ideaflow vs Obsidian

Obsidian is a bit too heavy/hackery for me. Tons of features, but really I
just need a quicker way to jot stuff down — something closer to Apple Notes
with a few more niceties.

One key feature of Ideaflow is cross-sectional filtering across different
conversations. If I write:

> Conversation with Tara Raj
> — Some note
> — Another interesting idea. `#Idea`
> — Another note
> — *Name of the Wind* `#Book`

Then searching for `#Book` filters to only the line matching that tag. My
natural workflow isn't to create titled pages — it's to append notes at the
speed of thought to the top of a giant text file. Ideaflow leans into this
common tendency in notetakers and makes it something to be proud of, versus
ashamed of its messiness. Especially helpful for folks who work on a lot of
projects and/or have ADHD and need to capture notes accretively across many
topics.
